A crown is sometimes referred to as a “cap.” This is an artificial covering cemented over an existing tooth that is specially prepared by your dentist. When a substantial amount of tooth structure has been lost, or when a tooth is cracked or has had a root canal, a crown may be indicated.
Types of Crowns
Ideally, I would always like to do the best treatment for my patient in any given situation. Which crown is ideal under different circumstances can be very different.
Gold crowns are the oldest standard of quality. My crown and bridge specialist who did my crowns has gold crowns, as does my periodontist, ( gum specialist), my hygienist, and most importantly my husband. This would seem to indicate that people who are informed and want their teeth to last choose gold. I often recommend gold crowns, especially to men. Gold crowns have stood the test of time, but many people, especially women, are concerned about aesthetics and the ability of modern cosmetic dentistry to make a mouth look totally natural.
