When a tooth is decayed or chipped a filling may be indicated. There are several different types of filling materials, but in the majority of the cases we recommend tooth colored restorative materials. Similar in color and texture to natural teeth, these fillings are less noticeable and much more attractive than amalgam, “silver” fillings. The tooth colored composite fillings actually bond to the teeth, in many cases making the tooth stronger.
In rare cases we still will use “silver” fillings. This is only in situations in which it is impossible to keep the area dry and isolated, which is important in properly placing a tooth colored filling.
Your best investment in your dental and physical health is to have your teeth cleaned and checked every 6 months. Your chance of finding decay at its earliest stages greatly increases when you maintain a consistent regime of oral hygiene and maintenance. With the aide of the Diagondent (Decay Indicator), we are able to find cavities when they are very small. This enables us to use tooth colored restorative materials with a minimum amount of tooth reduction, therefore extending the life of your teeth and fillings.
